How to Choose a University Bag

A practical guide to comparing dimensions, carrying options, compartments and price for your university day.

Start with what you actually carry to university, then compare dimensions, carrying options, compartments and closures. A bag’s appearance and category can help you begin browsing, but the details of the individual design should guide your choice.

In this guide

1. Make a list for your university day

Write down what you carry on a typical day and what you add on days when you need more. Group your list into:

  • Study items, such as the books, notebooks or folders you use.
  • Personal essentials, such as your wallet, keys and phone.
  • Occasional extras, such as a water bottle or a device in its case.

Identify your largest item and anything you want to keep separate from the rest. If your needs change between days, compare bags for the days you intend to use them rather than expecting one design to suit every situation.

Set a budget before comparing designs, and check the current price on each product page before ordering. Price alone is not enough to make your choice; compare it alongside the specifications that matter to you.

2. Check the measurements and opening

Read the dimensions on the product page and check what each measurement includes. Does the height refer to the body without the handles? Is depth listed?

If a specific item must fit, note its dimensions, including its case if you use one. Ask whether that item can be placed inside the exact bag you are considering and whether the bag can close with it inside. A photo or an actual fit check using the item, or one with the same dimensions, is more useful for verification than a general description such as “large” or “spacious.”

3. Start with your preferred carrying style

Choose a starting point for browsing, then check the options listed for each design:

  • If you prefer carrying a bag on your back, browse backpacks and check the straps and their adjustability.
  • If you prefer top handles, browse tote bags. Check the stated carrying options and handle length for the individual design.
  • If you prefer crossbody carry, browse crossbody bags and check the included strap and whether its length is adjustable.

Some designs offer more than one carrying option. Check which straps and handles actually come with the bag. A long strap alone does not establish that a design is intended for crossbody wear.

If you are deciding between crossbody and shoulder carry, read our crossbody vs shoulder bag guide before comparing designs.

4. Compare compartments and closures for your routine

Think about what each section or pocket would do for your belongings rather than comparing pocket counts alone. Ask yourself:

  • Do I want to keep my belongings together in one main section, or separate some into different compartments?
  • Which items do I need to reach often? Would the pocket’s position and closure work for that?
  • How does the main opening close? Do the photos and specifications explain the closure from inside and outside?

Check the package contents too, including an additional strap or small pouch when the individual product lists one. Do not assume that an accessory shown with another design comes with the bag you are choosing.

5. Use the same checklist for two designs

Before ordering, collect answers to six points for each bag:

  1. Available dimensions and what each measurement includes.
  2. Verification that your largest required item will fit.
  3. Carrying options and the included straps or handles.
  4. Interior layout and the main closure.
  5. Photos of your chosen color and the package contents.
  6. The current price and how it compares with your budget and required specifications.

If an essential detail is unclear, ask about it before choosing. Once you have identified your needs, open the product pages to compare photos and specifications using the same checklist.
